Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA)

Remote access approach that grants users per-application access based on identity and context, not network access.

Definition

ZTNA brokers connections to specific applications after verifying user identity, device posture, and policy, unlike traditional VPNs that place users on the network. Applications are not exposed to the internet, reducing attack surface and lateral movement. Examples include Zscaler Private Access, Palo Alto Prisma Access, Cloudflare Access, and Microsoft Entra Private Access.

Example

A contractor can reach only the ticketing web app, not the rest of the corporate network.

Exam tip

ZTNA replaces broad VPN access with least-privilege application access.
