Worm

Self-replicating malware that spreads across networks without user interaction by exploiting vulnerabilities.

Definition

Worms scan for vulnerable systems and copy themselves automatically, which allows extremely rapid spread and heavy network consumption. They do not need to attach to a host file. Famous examples include WannaCry, which spread via the SMBv1 EternalBlue exploit, and the 2003 SQL Slammer.

Example

WannaCry propagated to unpatched Windows hosts through SMB port 445 without anyone clicking anything.

Exam tip

Keywords "self-replicating" and "no user interaction" identify a worm.
