Work in Progress (WIP)

Work items that have started but are not yet finished.

Definition

In Kanban, explicit WIP limits cap the number of items in a state, which reduces multitasking, exposes bottlenecks, and improves flow.

Example

A WIP limit of 3 in Code Review means a 4th item cannot enter until one leaves.

Exam tip

Lower WIP reduces cycle time (Little's Law).
