Vulnerability Management

The continuous process of identifying, assessing, prioritizing, remediating and verifying security weaknesses.

Definition

A vulnerability management program inventories assets, scans regularly, analyzes and prioritizes findings by severity, exploitability and asset criticality, remediates or mitigates within defined SLAs, verifies fixes and reports metrics. Exceptions are documented with compensating controls. It is distinct from a one-time vulnerability assessment.

Example

Weekly authenticated scans, with critical internet-facing findings patched within 7 days and rescanned to confirm.

Exam tip

The lifecycle ends with verification (rescanning); patching without validation is incomplete.
