Vulnerability Prioritization

Ranking vulnerabilities for remediation based on severity, exploitability, exposure and asset criticality.

Definition

Effective prioritization combines CVSS severity, threat intelligence (EPSS, KEV, exploit availability), asset value, internet exposure and compensating controls. Risk-based vulnerability management focuses effort on the small subset most likely to cause harm.

Example

Fixing an exploited flaw on an internet-facing server before a higher CVSS issue on an isolated lab system.

Exam tip

On exams, prioritize internet-facing, critical-asset and actively exploited vulnerabilities first.
