Vulnerability Exception

A formally approved, documented decision to delay or not remediate a vulnerability, usually with compensating controls.

Definition

Exceptions record the business justification, risk owner, compensating controls and an expiration date for review. They are a form of risk acceptance and must be approved by an appropriate authority. Unmanaged exceptions accumulate hidden risk.

Example

An approved 90-day exception for a vendor system awaiting a certified patch.

Exam tip

Exceptions must have an owner and expiration; they are not permanent ignores.
