Video Matrix Switcher

A device that routes any of multiple video inputs to any of multiple outputs, often with scaling and EDID management.

Definition

Matrix switchers (for example 8x8) allow flexible routing in conference rooms and control rooms, controlled by front panel, control system or API. Features include seamless switching, HDCP management, audio de-embedding and HDBaseT outputs. AV-over-IP increasingly replaces fixed-size matrices with network-based routing.

Example

An 8x4 HDMI matrix sends any of eight laptops or players to four displays in a divisible room.

Exam tip

Matrix switching is any-to-any; a presentation switcher is many-to-one.
