AV-over-IP (AVoIP)

Distribution of audio and video signals as packets over standard Ethernet networks using encoders and decoders.

Definition

AV-over-IP replaces fixed matrix switchers with network switches: encoders convert sources into network streams and decoders convert them back for displays, giving scalable any-to-any routing. Systems vary by compression (uncompressed, light compression such as JPEG XS, or heavy compression such as H.264), bandwidth (1 GbE or 10 GbE) and latency. Network design needs multicast with IGMP snooping and a querier, QoS, adequate switch backplane capacity and often a dedicated VLAN.

Example

Twenty 1 GbE encoders and forty decoders on a managed switch with IGMP snooping deliver any source to any display.

Exam tip

Expect questions on multicast, IGMP snooping and bandwidth per stream when designing AV networks.
