AV Control System

A system of processors, touch panels and keypads that operates AV devices through IR, RS-232, relays and IP commands.

Definition

Control systems give users a simple interface to power displays, select sources, adjust volume, start calls and control lighting or shades, while the processor sends device-specific commands. Platforms include Crestron, AMX, Extron and Q-SYS, and many integrate with room scheduling, occupancy sensors and collaboration device APIs such as RoomOS xAPI. Programming must account for device feedback so the interface reflects the true state.

Example

Pressing Present on a touch panel powers the projector over RS-232, lowers the screen through relays and switches the matrix to the laptop input.

Exam tip

Know the control methods and that two-way control (with feedback) is preferred over one-way IR.
