Trojan Horse

Malware disguised as legitimate software that performs hidden malicious actions once the user runs it.

Definition

A trojan does not self-replicate; it relies on deceiving the user into installing it. Once executed it may open a backdoor, steal credentials, download additional payloads or give remote control. Pirated software, fake updates and malicious browser extensions are common carriers.

Example

A free "video codec" download that silently installs a remote access tool is a trojan.

Exam tip

Trojan = disguised as legitimate, no self-replication; a RAT is a trojan that provides remote control.
