Remote Access Trojan (RAT)

A trojan that gives an attacker covert remote administrative control over an infected system.

Definition

RATs provide capabilities such as file transfer, keylogging, screen capture, webcam access and command execution, communicating with attacker-controlled C2 infrastructure. They are often delivered by phishing or bundled downloads. Examples include njRAT, DarkComet, Remcos and Quasar.

Example

An attacker using Remcos to browse a victim's files and capture their screen remotely.

Exam tip

If the scenario stresses remote control of the victim's machine, choose RAT over generic trojan or keylogger.
