Taints and Tolerations

A Kubernetes mechanism where node taints repel pods unless the pods have matching tolerations.

Definition

Taint effects are NoSchedule, PreferNoSchedule, and NoExecute (evicts running pods). Control plane nodes are tainted by default. Tolerations allow but do not force placement.

Example

kubectl taint nodes gpu1 gpu=true:NoSchedule

Exam tip

Tolerations permit scheduling on tainted nodes; to attract pods use node affinity or nodeSelector as well.
