Tailgating

Gaining physical access by following an authorized person through a secured entrance without their knowledge.

Definition

Tailgating exploits courtesy and inattention at controlled doors. When the authorized person knowingly allows the entry, the act is usually called piggybacking. Mantraps (access control vestibules), turnstiles and staff awareness mitigate it.

Example

A tester carrying coffee cups waits for an employee to badge in and walks through behind them.

Exam tip

Security+ distinguishes tailgating (unknowing) from piggybacking (with consent); the control is an access control vestibule.
