sysctl

A Linux command and configuration mechanism for reading and setting kernel parameters at runtime.

Definition

sysctl reads and writes values under /proc/sys. Persistent settings go in /etc/sysctl.conf or files under /etc/sysctl.d/ and are applied with sysctl --system or at boot.

Example

sysctl -w net.ipv4.ip_forward=1 enables IP forwarding immediately.

Exam tip

sysctl -w is temporary; persistence requires a file under /etc/sysctl.d.
