/sys Filesystem (sysfs)

A virtual filesystem mounted at /sys that exposes kernel objects such as devices, drivers and buses in a structured hierarchy.

Definition

sysfs presents the kernel's device model to user space and is used by udev to create device nodes and by administrators to inspect or tune hardware settings. Like /proc, its contents are generated in memory and not stored on disk.

Example

cat /sys/block/sda/queue/scheduler shows the I/O scheduler in use for disk sda.

Exam tip

Know that /sys is for devices and drivers, while /proc is mainly for processes and kernel parameters.
