Striping

Splitting data into blocks written sequentially across multiple drives so they can be accessed in parallel.

Definition

Striping increases throughput and IOPS. Stripe (chunk) size affects performance for different I/O patterns. Striping alone (RAID 0) provides no redundancy.

Example

A 256 KB stripe size suits a large sequential backup workload.

Exam tip

Striping improves performance; it does not provide fault tolerance.
