Automatic Medium-Dependent Interface Crossover (Auto-MDIX)

A port feature that detects the cable type and swaps transmit and receive pairs automatically, so either straight-through or crossover cable works.

Definition

Auto-MDIX eliminates the need to choose between straight-through and crossover cables for like and unlike devices. It is standard on most modern switches and NICs and required behavior for 1000BASE-T's automatic pair handling. On some Cisco switches it requires speed and duplex set to auto.

Example

Two switches connect with a standard patch cable because Auto-MDIX swaps pairs automatically.

Exam tip

Older questions still expect crossover between like devices (switch to switch) when Auto-MDIX is absent.
