Statistical Process Control (SPC)

Use of statistical methods, chiefly control charts, to monitor and control a process.

Definition

Pioneered by Walter Shewhart, SPC distinguishes common from special cause variation. Chart types include X-bar and R, I-MR, p, np, c, and u charts.

Example

A p-chart tracks the proportion of defective orders each day.

Exam tip

Choose variable charts for continuous data and attribute charts for counts or proportions.
