Routing & Switching · Foundational

Static Route

A manually configured route to a destination prefix through a next-hop address or exit interface.

Definition

Static routes do not adapt to topology changes unless combined with tracking, but they consume no routing protocol overhead. On Cisco they have a default AD of 1 and are configured with ip route; on Junos they live under routing-options static with preference 5. They are common for stub networks, default routes and backup paths.

Example

ip route 192.168.50.0 255.255.255.0 10.0.0.2

Exam tip

A static route pointing only to a broadcast multi-access exit interface forces ARP for every destination; best practice is next hop or fully specified.
