Fully Specified Static Route

A static route that names both the exit interface and the next-hop IP address.

Definition

Specifying both the interface and next hop avoids recursive lookup and prevents the router from proxy-ARPing for every destination on Ethernet links. It is required for IPv6 static routes that use a link-local next hop, since link-local addresses are only unique per link.

Example

ipv6 route 2001:db8:5::/64 GigabitEthernet0/1 FE80::2

Exam tip

An IPv6 static route with a link-local next hop must include the exit interface or it will be rejected.
