Floating Static Route

A static route given a higher administrative distance than the primary route so it installs only when the primary fails.

Definition

By setting the static route's AD above that of the dynamic protocol (for example 130 versus OSPF 110), the static route stays out of the routing table while the dynamic route exists. If the dynamic route is withdrawn, the floating static route is installed as a backup path.

Example

ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 198.51.100.1 130 backs up an OSPF-learned default route.

Exam tip

The floating route's AD must be higher than the primary's; a value lower than the primary would make it the primary.
