Star Topology

A topology in which every node connects to a central device such as a switch.

Definition

Star topologies are easy to install, expand and troubleshoot, because a single cable failure affects only one node. The central device is a single point of failure. An extended star (hierarchical star) links multiple stars together and is the basis of modern LANs.

Example

All workstations connect to a 48-port switch in the closet.

Exam tip

Star's weakness is the central device; its strength is fault isolation of individual links.
