Software Repository

A server-hosted collection of signed software packages and metadata from which package managers install and update software.

Definition

Repositories are defined in /etc/yum.repos.d (RHEL) or /etc/apt/sources.list.d (Debian). Package managers verify GPG signatures to ensure integrity. Organizations often mirror repositories internally for controlled patching.

Example

A .repo file with baseurl=http://mirror.local/rhel9/appstream points DNF to an internal mirror.

Exam tip

If installs fail with GPG errors, the repository's signing key has not been imported.
