SMPTE ST 2110

A suite of SMPTE standards for carrying separate video, audio and ancillary data streams over IP networks in professional media.

Definition

ST 2110 splits essences into separate RTP streams: 2110-20 for uncompressed video, 2110-22 for compressed video such as JPEG XS, 2110-30 for AES67-based audio and 2110-40 for ancillary data, with timing defined in 2110-10 using PTP (SMPTE ST 2059). It is primarily used in broadcast facilities and requires high-bandwidth networks with careful multicast and PTP design. AMWA NMOS specifications handle discovery and connection management.

Example

A broadcast studio routes 1080p uncompressed 2110-20 video and 2110-30 audio over a 100 GbE spine-leaf network.

Exam tip

2110 separates essences; contrast with SDI, where audio is embedded in the video signal.
