JPEG XS

An ISO/IEC 21122 low-latency, lightweight video codec offering visually lossless quality at moderate compression ratios.

Definition

JPEG XS compresses by ratios around 10:1 or less with latency of a fraction of a frame, making it suitable for live production and AV-over-IP where heavy codecs like H.264 add too much delay. It is used in SMPTE ST 2110-22 and IPMX. Its efficiency is lower than long-GOP codecs but quality and latency are much better for interactive use.

Example

4K60 video is compressed with JPEG XS to fit on a 10 GbE link with sub-frame latency.

Exam tip

JPEG XS trades bandwidth efficiency for very low latency and visually lossless quality.
