SIP Redirect Server

A SIP server that answers a request with a 3xx response telling the caller where to resend it rather than forwarding it.

Definition

A redirect server looks up the target and returns a response such as 302 Moved Temporarily with one or more Contact headers. The originating user agent then sends a new INVITE directly to that contact. Redirect servers reduce load on the network core because they do not stay in the signaling path.

Example

A redirect server returns 302 with Contact sip:2001@10.1.1.20, and the caller re-sends its INVITE there.

Exam tip

3xx responses mean redirection; the original UAC, not the server, sends the new request.
