Separation of Privilege

Require more than one condition, key or party to grant access to sensitive functions.

Definition

Separation of privilege makes a single compromise insufficient, for example requiring both a password and a hardware token, or two approvers for a production deployment. In code, it can mean splitting a program into privileged and unprivileged components.

Example

A production release requires approval from two different engineers before the pipeline deploys.

Exam tip

Distinguish from separation of duties (organizational), though they are closely related.
