Saltzer and Schroeder Design Principles

Eight classic secure design principles from 1975 that underpin modern secure software design.

Definition

The principles are economy of mechanism, fail-safe defaults, complete mediation, open design, separation of privilege, least privilege, least common mechanism and psychological acceptability. Later lists add work factor and compromise recording. They are heavily tested on CSSLP and CISSP.

Example

Requiring every request to be authorized rather than caching permissions applies complete mediation.

Exam tip

Memorize the eight principles and be able to match a scenario to one.
