Semantic Versioning (SemVer)

A versioning scheme of MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH where major indicates breaking changes, minor adds compatible features, and patch fixes bugs.

Definition

SemVer communicates compatibility to consumers. Pre-release (-beta.1) and build metadata (+build.5) suffixes are allowed. Dependency managers use version ranges based on SemVer.

Example

Going from 2.3.1 to 3.0.0 signals an API-breaking change.

Exam tip

Breaking change = major bump; new backward-compatible feature = minor; bug fix = patch.
