Route Preference

Junos term for administrative distance: a 0-4294967295 value where the lower preference wins between route sources.

Definition

Junos selects the active route by comparing preference values from different protocols. Defaults include direct 0, local 0, static 5, OSPF internal 10, IS-IS Level 1 internal 15, IS-IS Level 2 internal 18, RIP 100, aggregate and generated 130, OSPF external 150, IS-IS external 160/165 and BGP 170. Preference can be changed per route or through routing policy.

Example

set routing-options static route 0.0.0.0/0 next-hop 192.0.2.1 preference 200 creates a backup default route.

Exam tip

Junos gives eBGP and iBGP the same preference (170), unlike Cisco's 20/200; expect a question comparing the two vendors.
