Junos Active Route Selection

The Junos process of choosing one active route per prefix: lowest preference, then protocol-specific tie-breakers.

Definition

Junos first compares preference (primary, then secondary preference). Ties are broken by protocol metrics and, for BGP, the BGP decision process (local preference, AS path length, origin, MED, eBGP over iBGP, IGP cost, cluster list, router ID). Only the active route is exported by default.

Example

show route 10.0.0.0/8 detail shows the active route with '*' and why others are inactive.

Exam tip

In show route output an asterisk marks the active route; Inactive reason explains losers.
