Route Flap Dampening

A BGP mechanism that suppresses routes that repeatedly flap by assigning penalties that decay over time.

Definition

Each flap adds a penalty (default 1000); when it exceeds the suppress limit (2000) the route is not advertised until the penalty decays below the reuse limit (750) using the half-life (15 minutes). Maximum suppress time caps the delay.

Example

bgp dampening 15 750 2000 60

Exam tip

Dampening applies to eBGP-learned routes by default; overly aggressive values can delay recovery.
