rm Command

A Linux/macOS command that deletes files and, with -r, directories.

Definition

rm removes files without a recycle bin. rm -r deletes directories recursively and rm -f forces deletion without prompts. rm -rf with elevated privileges can destroy a system, so double-check paths.

Example

rm -r /tmp/old_build

Exam tip

Deleted files with rm do not go to a trash folder.
