Representational State Transfer (REST)

An architectural style for web APIs that uses stateless HTTP requests on resources identified by URIs.

Definition

REST constraints are client-server, stateless, cacheable, uniform interface, layered system, and optional code on demand. Resources are manipulated with HTTP methods and represented in JSON or XML.

Example

PUT /api/v1/vlans/20 with a JSON body updates VLAN 20.

Exam tip

Statelessness means each request carries all context, including authentication; the server keeps no client session.
