HTTP Methods

The verbs used in HTTP requests, chiefly GET, POST, PUT, PATCH, and DELETE, that map to read, create, replace, partial update, and delete operations.

Definition

GET retrieves; POST creates or triggers actions; PUT replaces a resource; PATCH modifies part of it; DELETE removes it. GET is safe; GET, PUT, and DELETE are idempotent; POST is not, and PATCH is not guaranteed to be. HEAD and OPTIONS support metadata and CORS preflight.

Example

PATCH /restconf/data/ietf-interfaces:interfaces/interface=Gi1 changes only the description field.

Exam tip

CRUD mapping: Create=POST, Read=GET, Update=PUT/PATCH, Delete=DELETE. POST is the non-idempotent method.
