Keylogger

Software or hardware that records keystrokes to capture passwords and other sensitive input.

Definition

Software keyloggers hook keyboard APIs or run as kernel drivers; hardware keyloggers sit inline between the keyboard and computer. Captured data is stored locally or sent to the attacker. Multifactor authentication reduces the impact of captured passwords.

Example

A small USB device plugged between a keyboard and a public kiosk PC that logs every key press.

Exam tip

Hardware keyloggers are not detected by antivirus; physical inspection is the control.
