Remote

A named reference to another copy of a Git repository, typically hosted on a server, used for fetching and pushing.

Definition

The default remote created by clone is origin; forks commonly add the original repo as upstream. Remote-tracking branches such as origin/main record the remote's last known state.

Example

git remote add upstream https://github.com/original/repo.git

Exam tip

origin is a convention, not a keyword; upstream usually refers to the source of a fork.
