Refresh Rate

How many times per second a display redraws its image, measured in hertz (Hz).

Definition

Higher refresh rates (120, 144, 240 Hz) produce smoother motion than 60 Hz. The GPU, cable, and port must support the target resolution and refresh rate. Adaptive sync technologies (FreeSync, G-SYNC) vary the rate to reduce tearing.

Example

A 144 Hz monitor stuck at 60 Hz until the Windows advanced display setting is changed.

Exam tip

If a high refresh monitor runs at 60 Hz, check the cable/port version and the OS display settings.
