Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID)

A technique combining multiple drives into one logical unit for performance, redundancy or both, using striping, mirroring or parity.

Definition

Common levels are RAID 0, 1, 5, 6 and 10. RAID protects against drive failure but is not a backup, since deletion, corruption and ransomware affect all copies. It can be implemented in hardware controllers or software.

Example

Four 4 TB drives in RAID 10 provide 8 TB usable and survive one failure per mirror.

Exam tip

RAID is not a backup; expect this as a distractor.
