Privacy by Design (PbD)

Approach that embeds privacy into the design and operation of systems, processes, and business practices from the outset.

Definition

Developed by Ann Cavoukian, Privacy by Design has seven foundational principles: proactive not reactive; privacy as the default setting; privacy embedded into design; full functionality (positive-sum); end-to-end security; visibility and transparency; and respect for user privacy. GDPR Article 25 codifies data protection by design and by default.

Example

A new mobile app ships with location sharing turned off by default and collects only coarse location when enabled.

Exam tip

'Privacy as the default' means no action is required from the user to protect their privacy.
