Privacy-Enhancing Technologies (PETs)

Technologies that minimize personal data use and maximize data security while enabling processing.

Definition

PETs include encryption, pseudonymization, differential privacy, homomorphic encryption, secure multiparty computation, trusted execution environments, federated learning, zero-knowledge proofs, and synthetic data. Regulators encourage PETs to enable data sharing and AI development with lower privacy risk.

Example

Two hospitals use secure multiparty computation to compute joint statistics without sharing raw patient records.

Exam tip

Choose a PET that matches the threat: encryption protects data at rest; DP protects outputs.
