Priority Queue Provisioning Rule

The Cisco design guideline that strict-priority (LLQ) traffic should not exceed about 33 percent of link capacity.

Definition

Allowing too much traffic into a strict priority queue can starve other classes and make the priority queue itself behave like a FIFO with added delay. Cisco recommends limiting total priority traffic to roughly one third of the link. Call admission control keeps voice and video within this budget.

Example

On a 10 Mbps WAN link, the priority queue is sized at no more than about 3.3 Mbps.

Exam tip

If a question asks the recommended maximum LLQ percentage, answer 33 percent.
