Policy-Based Routing (PBR)

Forwarding packets based on criteria other than destination, such as source address or application, using a route map.

Definition

PBR is applied to the ingress interface and overrides normal destination-based forwarding for matching traffic. Route map match clauses select traffic (typically via ACL) and set clauses define the next hop, interface or IP precedence. Unmatched traffic is routed normally. Junos implements similar behavior with filter-based forwarding.

Example

ip policy route-map GUEST-TO-ISP2 on interface Gi0/1

Exam tip

PBR applies to incoming packets on the interface where it is configured; locally generated traffic needs ip local policy.
