Pod Disruption Budget (PDB)

A Kubernetes policy limiting how many pods of an application can be voluntarily disrupted at once, such as during node drains.

Definition

PDBs specify minAvailable or maxUnavailable. Evictions that would violate the budget are blocked, protecting availability during maintenance and cluster upgrades. They do not prevent involuntary disruptions.

Example

minAvailable: 2 for a 3-replica service ensures a drain evicts only one pod at a time.

Exam tip

A too-strict PDB can block node drains during upgrades.
