Rolling Deployment

A release strategy that gradually replaces instances of the old version with the new version in batches.

Definition

Rolling updates avoid needing double capacity but run mixed versions during rollout and roll back more slowly. Kubernetes Deployments use rolling updates by default, controlled by maxSurge and maxUnavailable.

Example

A Deployment with maxSurge: 1 and maxUnavailable: 0 replaces pods one at a time without reducing capacity.

Exam tip

Kubernetes' default strategy is RollingUpdate; the alternative built-in strategy is Recreate.
