Organizational Structure

How an organization arranges authority, reporting, and resources, affecting project manager authority.

Definition

Common types are functional (PM authority low, staff report to functional managers), weak/balanced/strong matrix (shared authority increasing toward the PM), and projectized (PM has high authority and dedicated staff). Matrix structures create dual reporting for team members.

Example

In a weak matrix the 'project manager' acts more like a coordinator or expediter.

Exam tip

Know who controls the budget and resources in each structure; in a strong matrix it is mainly the PM.
