Omnidirectional Antenna

An antenna that radiates equally in all horizontal directions in a doughnut-shaped pattern.

Definition

Omnidirectional antennas provide 360-degree horizontal coverage and are the default for most indoor APs. Increasing gain flattens the doughnut, extending horizontal range but reducing vertical coverage. They usually have 2 to 9 dBi of gain.

Example

Ceiling APs in offices use omni antennas to cover surrounding rooms.

Exam tip

Omni antennas are not isotropic; they radiate little energy straight up or down.
