Antenna Gain

The increase in signal strength in a given direction achieved by focusing radiated energy.

Definition

Antenna gain is passive and measured in dBi or dBd. Higher-gain antennas have narrower beamwidths, concentrating energy in a smaller area. Gain applies to both transmit and receive directions.

Example

A 14 dBi patch antenna focuses energy down a long corridor.

Exam tip

Higher gain means narrower beam, not more total energy.
