Network Device Interface (NDI)

A Vizrt (formerly NewTek) protocol for low-latency video, audio and control over standard IP networks, common in live production.

Definition

NDI uses software and hardware encoders and supports automatic discovery on the local network using mDNS, with a Discovery Server for larger networks. Full-bandwidth NDI uses visually lossless compression around 125 Mbps or more for 1080p60, while NDI HX uses H.264 or H.265 for lower bandwidth. It is popular for PTZ cameras, streaming and conferencing production.

Example

A PTZ camera sends NDI HX video to a streaming PC and receives pan and tilt commands over the same cable.

Exam tip

NDI suits 1 GbE production networks; full NDI uses much more bandwidth than NDI HX.
