Nested RAID

RAID levels combining two schemes, such as RAID 50 (striped RAID 5 sets) or RAID 60 (striped RAID 6 sets).

Definition

RAID 50 requires at least six drives and tolerates one failure per RAID 5 subset; RAID 60 requires at least eight and tolerates two per subset. They scale large arrays while limiting rebuild domains.

Example

Twelve drives as RAID 60 with two six-drive RAID 6 groups survive up to four failures (two per group).

Exam tip

In nested RAID, fault tolerance depends on which subsets the failed drives belong to.
